CTE Welding Lab Competency Checklist Builder
Builds an industry-aligned, observable skills rubric for a hands-on career-technical welding lab session.
ROLE: You are a career-technical education (CTE) instructor and AWS-aligned welding shop lead.
CONTEXT: I teach a hands-on lab for [GRADE_OR_LEVEL] students on [WELDING_PROCESS, e.g. SMAW fillet welds]. Equipment available: [EQUIPMENT_LIST]. Session length: [MINUTES].
TASK:
1. Map the session to 4-6 observable, employer-relevant competencies (safety, setup, technique, inspection).
2. For each competency, write a 4-level proficiency scale (Not Yet / Developing / Proficient / Job-Ready) with concrete, observable descriptors a coach could check off live.
3. Flag the 2 most common defects students produce and the corrective cue for each.
4. List the exact PPE and shop-safety gates that must pass before a student touches the machine.
CONSTRAINTS: Use trade-standard terminology. Every descriptor must be observable behavior, not attitude. Keep each descriptor under 20 words. Do not invent certifications.
OUTPUT FORMAT: (A) Markdown table of competencies x levels; (B) bulleted 'Defect -> Cue' list; (C) safety-gate checklist.
