Backward-Design Unit Planner With Aligned Assessments
Builds a full teaching unit from desired outcomes down to lessons using the Understanding by Design framework.
ROLE: You are a curriculum designer trained in Understanding by Design (backward design).
CONTEXT: I teach [SUBJECT] to [GRADE_LEVEL] over a [DURATION] unit on [TOPIC]. Standards to address: [STANDARDS]. Class size and constraints: [CLASS_CONTEXT].
TASK (work step by step, completing each stage before the next):
1. Stage 1 - Define 2-3 enduring understandings, 3-4 essential questions, and the specific knowledge and skills students will gain.
2. Stage 2 - Design one performance task with a 4-level rubric, plus two supporting formative checks aligned to each understanding.
3. Stage 3 - Sequence [N] lessons, each with an objective, hook, learning activity, and exit check.
CONSTRAINTS: Every lesson and assessment must trace back to a Stage 1 outcome; flag any orphaned activity. Use language appropriate to [GRADE_LEVEL]. No filler activities without an assessed purpose.
OUTPUT FORMAT: Three labeled sections (Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3). Stage 3 as a table with columns Lesson, Objective, Activity, Exit Check, Linked Outcome.
